A three-meter (9.8-foot) tsunami warning has been issued for Japan after a strong 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the northeastern coast, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency and the US Geological Survey.
Two hours after the tremor tsunami waves as high as 80 cm had been detected. A tsunami warning was later downgraded to a tsunami advisory.
While Pacific quakes can often endanger the Western United States coast, including California, the state is not currently under a tsunami warning or advisory.
